But it fails even as a soft-reboot, due to its disjointedness, mediocre ideas, and general awkwardness / low quality. A poor attempt at a soft-reboot disguised as a continuation of the original series. The revival was actually a strange, failed experiment. One could spend so many hours analyzing everything that’s wrong with it, and probably still wouldn’t be able to cover everything sufficiently.

“Millennium”, although much different from “Harsh Realm”, is also a series I greatly appreciate. As a matter of fact, I consider “Harsh Realm” a fascinating series which was treated very unfairly, and wasn’t given a chance to succeed. I say this because I believe that many if not most people who would refer to me as a CC hater probably haven’t seen either of those shows, much less bought them on DVD. But that’s an entirely different subject.Īside from being a huge fan of the original X-Files and of course owning it on Blu-ray, I’m also a fan of both Carter’s “Millennium” and “Harsh Realm,” and I own both on DVD. Although I certainly have my issues with both of those seasons, I’ve also felt that much of the criticism directed toward Carter at the time was irrational and unfair. I’ve also strongly defended seasons 8 and 9, two seasons that were (and still are) heavily criticized by many fans. To make it perfectly clear, Carter is actually my favorite writer of the original series. Most of them are great, and the “Anasazi” arc alone is a masterpiece on so many levels. Even though I liked the show since the very first episode, I really became a hardcore fan after “Colony.” There are so many Carter episodes to choose from that are downright fantastic. Sure, there are some bad apples like “Space” and “Fight Club,” as well as episodes that I enjoy somewhat less than others, but aside from that I have no significant issues with the vast majority of the episodes he was involved in.

Among those 72 episodes, there are not that many I can say I strongly dislike. He has written and co-written a total of 72 episodes on the original series. In order to counter that, I will explicitly state the following: The only reason I became a hardcore fan of The X-Files is because of Chris Carter’s episodes.

Unfortunately, people like myself are commonly labeled “Chris Carter haters” by fans of the revival. It’s just all sorts of wrong, and for so many different reasons, all which will be covered in this essay. The second word would be “absurd.” But the revival is so much more than those two words. If I were forced to pick one single word to describe the revival, it would be “incoherent.” Not only incoherent in regards to the original series, but also within the revival itself. I sincerely hoped that season 11 will be different, but sadly, instead it was just more of the same. Even after season 10 and its embarrassing finale (which technically never happened), I still had some hope that things will be turned around. But as time went on, it became obvious to me what was happening: the destruction of a franchise. After the premiere of “My Struggle” I tried my best to find every positive review of that episode, compiling reviews and presenting them to negative folks as “proof” that not everyone disliked it. Even though I had certain problems with it and was very worried about what will happen next, I vehemently defended it in online discussions, especially on the old IMDb boards. The interesting thing is, I didn’t dislike it right from the start. Since I’ve had great difficulty getting over how badly everything turned out, I believe that writing in depth about my issues with the revival will help me get these things out of my system, and help me finally close a personal chapter. The reason I chose to write this particular (quite long) essay right here is because for a long time I’ve strongly felt the need to put all my thoughts about it into one single document. But after some time I decided to remove it, among other things because I had hope that season 11 will bring things back to normal. After the season 10 finale (“My Struggle II”) aired, I was very disappointed and wrote an essay harshly criticizing season 10, with various questions directed at Chris Carter. Conversely, I’m a big critic of The X-Files “Event Series” 1 & 2, commonly referred to as seasons 10 & 11, or simply the “X-Files Revival.” I consider the revival to be very poor, an inexcusable disaster that should never have happened the way it did.

My love and passion for it can’t be compared to my enjoyment of any other movie or TV series, although needless to say I’m a fan of other works as well. I consider it to be the best TV series of all time.
